Location
At the turn of the 20th century, when the Lower East Side was the most densely populated place in the world, the vast majority of the district's 550,000 residents were Jewish. The Lower East Side was the first port of call for millions of Jews fleeing persecution in Eastern Europe. Over a century later, we set off to explore the ancestral gateway to America through the diverse cooking traditions of the Jewish diaspora, and through the food discover the history and cultural legacy of Jewish culture in New York. Did Jews become assimilated to New York, or the other way around: New York assimilated to the Jews! Comedian Lenny Bruce declared: “It doesn’t matter, even if you’re Catholic. If you live in New York, you’re Jewish. If you live in Butte, Montana, you are going to be goyish if you’re Jewish.”
Capacity: 25 persons per guide
Note: All food is included. 5 tastings on the go (sidewalk tastings, or done inside the establishments).
Meeting Location: 2nd Ave & E Houston St
Final Destination: Eldridge St
