The Leadership Essentials Program: Pathways to Leadership #1 in Executive Leadership Development

About this Event

We believe – and we know from experience and solid research – that leadership skills can be developed and enhanced. The best leaders are continually finding ways to develop themselves and get even better. We help you on your journey.

Based on the Center for Leadership’s Leadership Competency Builder©, The Leadership Essentials Programs (LEP) will challenge and help you cultivate the self-insight and skills that will prepare you for greater leadership success.

Who should attend?

The Leadership Essentials Programs are designed for individuals looking to develop foundational leadership capabilities. Well-qualified participants are recently-appointed leaders or those who informally lead othersat work, those looking to hone basic leadership skills and insights, or those who are preparing to take on leadership roles.

There is no formal prerequisite to attend either of the LEP programs. Each program is unique such that participants may attend one or both programs and in any order.

If you previously attended The Leadership Essentials Program: Pathways to Leadership, you may want to consider attending The Leadership Essentials Program: Drivers for Success, to provide additional value for your leadership development journey.

Program details

The Pathways to Leadership is offered each year in the spring and the Drivers for Success each fall. The session information and details are listed below for the 2021 programs.

Continuing Education

The Center for Leadership is a recognized provider of both Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and SHRM professional development credits (SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP recertification). Participants of this program will be eligible to receive CEUs and SHRM-PDCs with participating professional organizations.

Topics (subject to change)

Personality and Decision-Making: The journey begins with leading self. A core component of being an effective leader and making the right choices, is understanding how who we are affects the decisions we make and how we make those decisions. Although we may not be able to change who we are, an awareness of our inclinations and natural tendencies and how these play a role in our leadership behaviors, allows us to better manage and focus those behaviors for optimal results. Every participant receives a customized feedback report detailing their five major personality dimensions.
Connecting with Others: Being alert and understanding the hazards along the way is critical for beginning your leadership journey. Success in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world of “continuous partial attention” requires new skills to prevent misunderstandings and maximize our ability to work smarter together. Learning and practicing communication strategies that can be immediately put into practice can generate more effective communication, drive optimal performance, and ensure successful conversations more often.
Leveraging Networks: Deciding which are the critical stops along the road can make the journey easier and more successful. No doubt you’ve heard the saying “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” But in fact, that’s still only part of the story. Building social capital requires individuals to consider the diffuseness and structural complexity of the entire network of people around them. Understanding network dynamics and the critical role strategic networks play in determining success is a powerful skillset for professionals.
Delivering Results: Developing Your Leadership Agenda: Creating a clear roadmap for next steps on the leadership journey significantly enhances the chances you will be successful at embracing change. The written agenda includes a challenge the participant has identified as needing attention, followed by the development of goals and objectives, delineation of strategies and tactics, identification of human and financial resources, plans for implementation, and finally, an evaluation and feedback plan.
